# Top Tips For A Great Photography Session

Photograph of two cats in a photography studio having their photo taken

We know you might be nervous about having your photograph taken so we’ve come up with our top tips for a great photography session. But before we delve into that let’s take a minute to thank Rachel and Ross (our studio kitty cats) for being brave and getting in front of our camera today to show it’s not that difficult…some might even say, a little bit fun 😉

Our tips are below, but keep reading as we have some very special tips at the end of this post from our very special feline friends.

Top Tip 1. - Trust

Take the time to find a professional photographer that you like and trust. Make sure their work is the type of photography you love, please look through their portfolio and make sure their work is consistent and that you love the work they produce. Then reach out and talk to them about the session, what it will be like and how best to prepare for it. A great photographer will provide you with all this information and help you every step of the way. A well prepared and relaxed client is the best starting point and is why we always take the time to connect with our clients via email, phone, text and in person (if time allows) before every photography session. Make sure you actually connect and like the person behind the camera, if you aren’t comfortable with them, it will be difficult to relax in front of the camera. You need someone who understands what you need and how to achieve that for you.

Top Tip 2. - Listen

You know, like and trust your chosen photographer. So, before your photography session make sure you’ve read through all the information they’ve shared with you. Here are Clare Lacanau Photography we’ve taken a lot of time to prepare a ‘what to expect guide’ which runs through what to wear, bring and things to think about before your session, we are always here to discuss clothing options and any concerns you may have before your session.

Booking a professional photographer gives you the reassurance that they are indeed a professional and know what they are doing. They will be able to guide you through your session and help you look your very best. They are trained in posing techniques, as well as how to use angles and lighting to produce the most flattering photographs of you, for you.

During your session you will often hear things like:

Tall through your body

Relax your shoulders, mouth, eyes….

Chin forward and down a little

Tidy tails (oh, this one is just for pets!!) 😉

Tilt your head a little this way, straighten up

Eyes down your body line

Smile with your eyes…sounds tricky but we can explain what this means 🙂

Top Tip 3. - Relax

Let your photographer know about any concerns you may have before and during your photography session. We are always here and holding a space just for you, so we want to know if there’s something you are unsure of or uncomfortable with. Our photography style at Clare Lacanau Photography is light and airy and we also like to keep the session light and fun too. With plenty of time to relax and breathe.

You’ve got this and you should feel like your photographer does too.

Top Seven Tips For A Great Photography Session From Rachel and Ross

1. Pay attention to your photographer…especially when they have a bag of treats balanced on their lens.

2. Good connection makes for a great photograph – slight head tilt adds a little something don’t you think?!

3. Elongate your body, don’t sit hunched or sit back into your weight….Rachel wishes she listened when this directive was given.

4. A little asymmetry makes for some nice interest in your photographs…nice paws Ross!

5. Check your jewellery is around the right way…your photographer is trained to look for these things and will ask you to reset things occasionally. However, sometimes it’s about documenting a moment more than having everything perfect 😉

6. Keep your tails tidy!

7. Enjoy the moment. Documenting your life is soo important, and soo worth it!! We can’t wait to see these photographs in print and displayed in our home very soon.
